Unit 1 examines the sources of tension among European nations that created the volatile political environment prior to the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand which triggered war in 1914. Consideration will be given to the major causes and events of the war, the impact of new technologies applied to warfare, and the nature and terms of the peace process as the Allied Powers met at Versailles in 1919
SCO 1.1: Students will be expected to draw upon primary/secondary sources to demonstrate an understanding of the causes of World War 1. (We covered this outcome through the following activities between Friday, September 18th - Tuesday, September 29th)

Wednesday, September 23 - Monday September 28 Causes of World War I (textbook assignment worked on and reviewed in class. Student portfolio component) Here is my Causes of WW1 powerpoint that helps summarizes this section. I reviewed the slideshow and discussed these questions with students in class on Friday 25th and Monday 28th. Also took the remaining 15 mins of Monday's class to talk about the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand and it's consequences for Europe.

The month following the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand is referred to as the July Crisis 1914. Thursday, October 1 - Friday, October 2: Opening Moves and the Beginning of Stalemate. The focus of this section is to help students understand the origins stalemate and trench warfare which came to dominate Europe's Western Front during WW1. We viewed the 5 clips (Schlieffen Plan, Belgium, France, Russia, Britain, and Stalemate) outlining the action of the major European powers in the opening months of the war and completed this viewing guide.
